The Culture Factory of East London
Founded in 2012 by Thomas Ermacora, LimeWharf Makerhub is a cultural innovation hub situated along Regent’s Canal, East London. Through various programs, residencies and happenings, it provides an experimentation infrastructure including London’s first fablab, the Machines Room maker space, with a social impact focus, successfully incubating a number of art and technology startups and projects such as Technology Will Save Us, OpenDesk, SAM Labs, Music Hackspace and more…
Our friends at the Machines Room run a vibrant community of East London businesses, designers, architects, artists and engineers. They have a Fab Lab & makerspace with machines for laser & vinyl cutting, 3D printing and CNC and also host corporate events, team building days, meetups and exhibitions (available for venue hire).
Limewharf has hosted over 250 experimental events, the majority of which were showcasing new, scratch works, unexpected collaborations, or working with young & marginalised creatives to offer a safe environment to creatively express & develop work. We have produced events across all our spaces, including bedrooms, machines room, rooftops, the street, canalside, gaps between buildings and community gardens. We turned bikes into bars, exhibition plinths into stages, using old things in new ways to make the most out of our legacy.
Since 2012 LimeWharf has hosted many, varied residencies, from short term, site specific to longer term living & learning within our community. The international residency program takes global artists and houses them in our residential spaces to collaborate with our founder & the wider community. The in house residency programme allows performers/artists/musicians to benefit from whatever resource they need in particular, generally resulting in an end event which is open to the public or ticketed, or a piece of art that remains in the space. LimeWharf works with artists to obtain ACE funding, which allows us to help incubate creatives, as well as ideas & projects.
LimeWharf is a platform which offers a unique mix of art, technology, and social consciousness. Our residents are asked to respond to these themes, while research is guided by our curatorial team who are currently exploring the relationship between humanity and technology through art.
A strong supporter of the FabCity project, LimeWharf believes in placemaking as the best way to develop a neighbourhood. Collaborations with our partners ClearVillage and Machines Room steer our approach to urban regeneration.
LimeWharf is a fully accessible venue. We take pride in our use of sustainable suppliers including Ecotricity, Dirty Harrys (full range of eco brands, zero to landfill, no chemicals used) and local alcohol suppliers, East London Liquor Company & Toast Ale (produced from foodwaste). As well as hosting an Ecological Residency on our barge, LimeWharf is supporting innovation along the canal with projects such as a floating ecosystem in partnership with Biomatrix Water. LimeWharf is a Living Wage employer.
Partners in growth
The Limewharf has incubated numerous successful startups which have remained strong partners in our reciprocal growth.
Limewharf are the most welcoming, supportive space from which a business can grow. For us, having the perfect location, space to create, perform, rehearse, socialise, sit at a desk and have meetings, Limewharf was the making of us. Housing our club night Sink The Pink and all its requirements is no mean feat, but there is nothing that Tam and the team wouldn't do for us, we feel honoured and blessed to be part of Limewharfds story and are so proud to see members of our crew working there and putting on successful nights in the space. We were also able to launch our company East Creative Agency at Limewharf, making the most of the incredible space, strong internet and great vibes. We are eternally grateful to Limewharf for supporting us as we found our feet. Amy Redmond, East Creative Agency (Community members 2014-15)
Joachim @ SAM Labs
At SAM Labs, one of our main focuses is community. At LimeWharf, we've found that and more - much more. The friendliness between companies is ever present during frequent community events. The Wharf has been incredible in providing the resources for our business, and our neighbours', to grow and thrive. The east London location not only cultures us here at SAM, but also serves as a global selling point. To be part of this startup scene is an incredible experience and we're incredibly happy to do so in the driven, lively and creative LimeWharf community.SAM Labs
